It is generally accepted that there is a 1:2 or even a 1:4 ratio when reformatting a printed page for iPad. That is, 1 print page will become 2 or 4 pages on iPad. An exception to this is photos which normally work fine on a one-to-one ratio. The following are some tricks you can use with the Oomph platform to make this easier and to take your content "off the page" and turn it into an experience for your user.
In Page Slideshows & Card flips
In Page Slideshows invite the user to swipe to reveal more allowing them to control the rate they view what's available to them, and also adding a subtle level of interactivity to the page that keeps them more engaged. But don't think that IPS are just for images - they are often used in business publications to present data in a way that's not overwhelming to the user.
Page Swaps
Page swaps are sneaky in the sense in that you can manipulate the user into thinking they are viewing just one page, when in reality they have viewed multiple pages worth of content.
How so? Page swaps generally require you to use some form of in page navigational cue (e.g. buttons numbered 1, 2, 3, 4) which when tapped, reveal different content to the user. Here is another example from Fitness First magazine. The user can tap along the list of vitamin types which reveals a new set of information and images below. Page swaps are easy to author and very easy for the user.
Double Page Spreads
Print ads do not translate 100% to iPad. Your advertisers should be encouraged to create for the medium, and utilise the tools available to them. Also, TV commercials work very well as an alternate to print ads. DPS spreads normally look fine in landscape orientation. In portrait orientation DPS can be represented several ways:
DPS in Portrait | Pros | Cons |
---|---|---|
Resize to fit, black bars above and below. | Simple | DPS is almost certainly unreadable |
Resize to fit, black bars above and below, tap to expand to full screen slideshow showing left and right side of DPS. See Qantas Advert in Oomph demo mag. | Slightly more complex than above (but every easy to duplicate when done once) | Takes more time than above as DPS need to be sliced in two. |
